Students who wish to study in Germany and do not have an idea as to which degree program to choose, should, first of all, know which type of degree course they want to pursue namely- graduate, postgraduate, Masters or doctorate. They should also be clear as to which subjects or type, of course, they wanted to go for in higher education institutions.
You have to choose to choose from:
- Traditional German universities
- Universities of armed forces
- Universities of technology
- Universities of education
- Universities of management studies
- Universities of art, music, and film
Some of the basic factors that could influence your decision regarding which degree program to choose in Germany are below.
How To Select The Right Course For Your Masters
- Entrance qualification to higher education universities
In order to prove that you are eligible for a German higher education institution, you have to prove that you possess the required qualifications for higher education entrance and can get admission in a good university in India too.
The foremost requirement is that you should have a secondary school leaving certificate and a certificate showing that you have successfully cleared a university’s entrance exam. The school leaving certificate should be equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualification known as ‘Abitur’. This can be checked through DAAD’s admission database.
The candidates from non-EU countries need to get the higher education entrance qualification checked from uni-assist or student registration office of the chosen university. In the case of your school certificate is not recognized as same of Abitur, you’ll need to appear for Feststellungsprüfung, which is an initial assessment test of your knowledge related to the course you’ve studied till date.
- Selection procedures of the German University

Some universities also give equal importance to letters of motivation and special academic subject-specific qualification at the time of allotting admission for masters courses to international students. Few German universities also undertake general selection tests or academic tests. So please contact the selected universities to know about the selection procedures, and find out whether you’re eligible or not. This would help you in choosing right degree course.
- German language fluency
Most of the German universities demand proof of your German language proficiency before you take up any degree course. You would be exempted from German language proficiency requirement, if you wish to study an International Degree program taught totally in the English language.
However, it is always advisable to have some basic knowledge of German language as it makes your life a lot easier while you’re living there. While choosing your course, be careful of the language of instruction. The German language can also be learned parallel to your studies in Germany.
- Fees structure and cost of living
Cost is one of the major factors that lead many students to change their preferences of courses and degrees. Most of the public universities in Germany charge no tuition fees or very little semester fees. So all you have to do is calculate the average amount of cost of living you would be spending while staying and studying in Germany. On an average 800 Euros per month is the expense that includes rent and food bills.
Some private, as well as public universities, do charge tuition fees for Management courses. If you are targeting to take up such course, find out the fees amount. Also, you can search for the supportive scholarships offered by the universities where you are applying or the German government.
